Crop overview
- Crop group
- Cucurbit
- Lifecycle

- Growth habit
- Vigorous Trailing Vine With Tendrils
This profile covers edible, small-fruited vining pumpkins and winter squash trained vertically on a very strong trellis. Choose cultivars whose mature fruit generally weighs no more than about 1.4 kg (3 lb). It includes suitable cultivars from Cucurbita pepo, Cucurbita moschata and Cucurbita maxima. It does not cover summer squash, bush or compact squash, giant pumpkins, large-fruited winter squash, ornamental gourds, bottle gourds or unsupported heavy fruit. Cultivar-specific fruit weight, vine length, maturity and storage guidance should take priority where it differs.

Container
Minimum size: 60 L
Plants per container: 1
Grow one small-fruited vining cultivar in a broad, stable container holding at least 60 L (about 16 US gal) of potting mix. A larger container is preferable for vigorous cultivars and in hot, dry or windy conditions. Provide excellent drainage, regular feeding and consistent watering. Anchor the trellis independently or very firmly so the mature vine and suspended fruit cannot topple the container. Train the vine regularly and support developing fruit in slings. Container-grown trellised squash may dry out more quickly than plants grown in the ground.
